I missed a QRA yesterday (Friday 8th March 2016) so thought I would write a little post on it as I like to catch all South QRA’s and provide details whenever it’s appropriate to do so. My alerting system happened to be offline unfortunately, typical it being the only time it’s been off all year!

According to our friend Michael Kitchen (@KitchenMichael on Twitter ) 2 Typhoons from 11 Squadron got Airborne, serials ZJ942 & ZJ927. “Sonic Booms” were reported around 1550 according to @Picklejim on Twitter and AOC No1 Group, Air Vice-Marshal Gary M Waterfall CBE RAF Tweeted : “Sorry for the sonic boom to Northants. UK Air Defence. Ready 24/7/365. Wherever, whenever. #securingtheskies”

The QRA was for a German Civillian Challenger 300 Jet from what I can ascertain and it failed to respond to ATC due to Radio Problems although I have had a report it was communicating on VHF Guard/D&D. It was intercepted and escorted into Cardiff Airport by the two Typhoons. The Typhoons then went on to refuel from the supporting Voyager that lifted from RAF Brize Norton. The Challenger 300 Jet left the airport at 1920L and was thought to be heading to its original destination of Dublin.

Unusually quite a few people seemed to capture images of the aircraft being escorted so I’ve decided to share them as some may find them an interesting addition.
